1 Kings 18

1 After a long time, in the third year of the drought, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the face of the earth.”

1 एक लंबे समय के बाद, तीसरे साल में एलियाह को याहवेह का यह आदेश प्राप्‍त हुआ: “जाओ, स्वयं को अहाब के सामने पेश करो. मैं पृथ्वी पर बारिश भेज रहा हूं.”

2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria,

2 तब एलियाह अपने आपको अहाब की उपस्थिति में प्रस्तुत करने चले गए. इस समय शमरिया में अकाल बहुत ही भारी था.

3 and Ahab summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Now Obadiah greatly feared the LORD,

3 अहाब ने ओबदयाह को बुलवाया. ओबदयाह याहवेह का बड़ा भक्त था.

4 for when Jezebel had slaughtered the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty men per cave, providing them with food and water.)

4 वास्तव में जब ईजेबेल ने याहवेह के भविष्यवक्ताओं को मारना शुरू किया था, ओबदयाह ने सौ भविष्यवक्ताओं को पचास-पचास करके गुफा में छिपा रखा था और वह उनके लिए भोजन और जल का प्रबंध करते रहे थे.

5 Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go throughout the land to every spring and every valley. Perhaps we will find grass to keep the horses and mules alive so that we will not have to destroy any livestock.”

5 अहाब ने ओबदयाह से कहा, “सारे देश में जाकर जल के सोतों और घाटियों की खोज करो. संभव है हमें हमारे घोड़ों और खच्चरों के लिए चारा मिल ही जाए और उनके प्राण बच जाएं. इस प्रकार हमारे पशु नाश होने से बच जाएंगे.”

6 So they divided the land to explore. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went the other way by himself.

6 इसके लिए अहाब और ओबदयाह ने सारे देश को दो भागों में बांट लिया. अहाब एक दिशा में चला गया और ओबदयाह अकेले दूसरी दिशा में.

7 Now as Obadiah went on his way, Elijah suddenly met him. When Obadiah recognized him, he fell facedown and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”

7 जब ओबदयाह मार्ग में ही थे कि उनकी भेंट एलियाह से हो गई. ओबदयाह ने उन्हें पहचान लिया. भूमि पर मुख के बल होकर उन्होंने एलियाह से कहा, “क्या आप ही मेरे स्वामी एलियाह हैं?”

8 “It is I,” he answered. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here!’”

8 एलियाह ने उत्तर दिया, “हां. जाकर अपने स्वामी को सूचित करो, ‘देखिए, एलियाह आ गया है.’”

9 But Obadiah replied, “How have I sinned, that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to put me to death?

9 ओबदयाह ने उन्हें उत्तर दिया, “मुझसे ऐसा कौन सा पाप हो गया है,” जो आप मृत्यु दंड के लिए मुझे अहाब के हाथों में सौंप रहे हैं?

10 As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent someone to search for you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made that kingdom or nation swear that they had not found you.

10 “याहवेह, आपके जीवित परमेश्वर की शपथ, न तो कोई ऐसा देश है न ऐसा राष्ट्र, जहां मेरे स्वामी ने आपको खोजने किसी को न भेजा हो. और जब उन्हें यह सूचना दी गयी, एलियाह तो यहां भी नहीं है, वह उस देश और राष्ट्र से शपथ खिलाई, कि खोजने पर भी उन्हें आप नहीं मिले.

11 And now you say, ‘Go tell your master that Elijah is here!’

11 और यहां आपका आदेश है, जाकर अपने स्वामी को बताओ, ‘देखिए, यहां है एलियाह!’

12 I do not know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you off when I leave you. Then when I go and tell Ahab and he does not find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.

12 मैं जैसे ही यहां आपको छोड़कर जाऊंगा, याहवेह के आत्मा आपको न जाने कहां ले जाएंगे. और जब मैं अहाब को सूचना दूंगा और वह आपको यहां नहीं पाएंगे, वह तो मुझे मृत्यु दंड दे देंगे, जबकि मैं आपका सेवक बचपन से याहवेह के लिए भय रखता आया हूं.

13 Was it not reported to my lord what I did when Jezebel slaughtered the prophets of the LORD? I hid a hundred prophets of the LORD, fifty men per cave, and I provided them with food and water.

13 क्या मेरे स्वामी को इस विषय में बताया नहीं गया, कि जब ईजेबेल ने याहवेह के भविष्यवक्ताओं की हत्या कर दी थी, मैंने उस स्थिति में क्या किया था, मैंने कैसे याहवेह के सौ भविष्यवक्ताओं को पचास-पचास करके गुफा में छिपा दिया था और उनके लिए भोजन और जल की व्यवस्था की थी?

14 And now you say, ‘Go tell your lord that Elijah is here!’ He will kill me!”

14 और अब आप आदेश दे रहे है, जाकर अपने स्वामी को सूचना दो, ‘देखिए, यहां है एलियाह.’ अहाब तो ज़रूर मेरी हत्या कर देंगे!”

15 Then Elijah said, “As surely as the LORD of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will present myself to Ahab today.”

15 एलियाह ने उन्हें उत्तर दिया, “मैं जिनका सेवक हूं, उस जीवित, सेनाओं के याहवेह की शपथ, आज मैं निश्चित ही अपने आपको अहाब के सामने प्रस्तुत करूंगा.”

16 So Obadiah went to inform Ahab, who went to meet Elijah.

16 तब ओबदयाह अहाब से भेंटकरने चले गए. और उन्हें यह सूचना दे दी. अहाब एलियाह से मिलने चला.

17 When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?”

17 एलियाह को देखते ही अहाब कह उठा, “अच्छा तुम्हीं हो इस्राएल के सतानेवाले!”

18 “I have not troubled Israel,” Elijah replied, “but you and your father’s house have, for you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed the Baals.

18 एलियाह ने उत्तर दिया, “सतानेवाला मैं नहीं, आप और आपके पिता का परिवार है. आप हैं जिन्होंने याहवेह के आदेशों को टाला है और बाल देवताओं का अनुसरण किया है.

19 Now summon all Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel, along with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

19 इसलिये अब मेरे सामने कर्मेल पर्वत पर सारे इस्राएल को इकट्ठा होने के लिए आदेश भेजिए. इसके अलावा बाल के चार सौ पचास और अशेरा के चार सौ भविष्यवक्ताओं को भी बुलाइए, जो ईजेबेल की मेज़ पर भोजन करते हैं.”

20 So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.

20 तब अहाब ने सारे इस्राएल और भविष्यवक्ताओं को कर्मेल पर्वत पर इकट्ठा होने का आदेश दिया.

21 Then Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him. But if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people did not answer a word.

21 एलियाह ने भीड़ के निकट आकर कहा, “दो मतों के बीच तुम लोग और कब तक डगमगाते रहोगे? यदि याहवेह ही परमेश्वर हैं तो उनका अनुसरण करो; और अगर बाल, तो उसका.” इसके उत्तर में लोग एक शब्द तक न कह सके.

22 Then Elijah said to the people, “I am the only remaining prophet of the LORD, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.

22 तब एलियाह ने भीड़ को कहा, “सिर्फ मैं; याहवेह का भविष्यद्वक्ता बाकी रह गया हूं, मगर बाल के भविष्यद्वक्ता चार सौ पचास व्यक्ति हैं.

23 Get two bulls for us. Let the prophets of Baal choose one bull for themselves, cut it into pieces, and place it on the wood but not light the fire. And I will prepare the other bull and place it on the wood but not light the fire.

23 हमें दो बछड़े दिए जाएं. उन्हें अपने लिए बछड़ा चुनने दिया जाए. वे उसके टुकड़े कर लकड़ी पर सजा दें, मगर लकड़ी में आग न लगाई जाए. मैं भी दूसरे बछड़े को तैयार कर लकड़ी पर सजाऊंगा मगर उसमें आग न लगाऊंगा.

24 Then you may call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people answered, “What you say is good.”

24 तुम लोग अपने देवता की दोहाई देना और मैं याहवेह की दोहाई दूंगा. परमेश्वर वही होगा, जो आग के द्वारा उत्तर देगा.” भीड़ ने एक स्वर में उत्तर दिया, “अच्छा विचार है यह!”

25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Since you are so numerous, choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.”

25 एलियाह ने बाल के भविष्यवक्ताओं के सामने प्रस्ताव रखा, “अपने लिए एक बछड़ा चुन लो और पहले तुम इसे तैयार करो, क्योंकि तुम लोग गिनती में अधिक हो. अपने देवता की दोहाई दो, मगर उसमें आग न लगाना.”

26 And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, shouting, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no sound, and no one answered as they leaped around the altar they had made.

26 उन्होंने उन्हें दिए गए बछड़े को लेकर उसे बलि के लिए तैयार किया और उन्होंने बाल को बलि देनी शुरू की और सुबह से दोपहर तक वे यह कहकर दोहाई देते रहे, “हे बाल, हमारी सुनो!” किंतु न तो कोई आवाज ही सुनी गई और न किसी से कोई उत्तर ही मिला. वे अपनी बनाई हुई वेदी के आस-पास उछलते-कूदते रहे.

27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them, saying, “Shout louder, for he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or occupied, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened!”

27 दोपहर के समय एलियाह ने उनका मज़ाक उड़ाकर कहा: “थोड़ा ऊंची आवाज में पुकारो! वह देवता है, हो सकता है वह ध्यानमग्न होगा, या वह शौच के लिए गया होगा या यह भी संभव है कि वह यात्रा पर गया हो या वह गहरी नींद में हो, जिसे जगाना ज़रूरी हो गया है.”

28 So they shouted louder and cut themselves with knives and lances, as was their custom, until the blood gushed over them.

28 तब वे ऊंची आवाज में चिल्लाते हुए अपनी प्रथा के अनुसार तलवारों और बर्छियों से अपने आपको छेदने लगे, जिससे उनकी देह लहूलुहान हो गई.

29 Midday passed, and they kept on raving until the time of the evening sacrifice. But there was no response; no one answered, no one paid attention.

29 दोपहर के बाद, वे संध्या बलि तक आवेश में पागलों जैसे बड़बड़ाते रहे, मगर कहीं से कोई आवाज सुनाई नहीं दी. न किसी ने उत्तर दिया न किसी ने इनकी ओर ध्यान दिया.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people approached him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been torn down.

30 तब सभी लोगों को एलियाह ने कहा, “मेरे पास आओ.” सभी उनके पास आ गए. एलियाह ने याहवेह की वेदी की मरम्मत की थी, जो इस समय टूटी-फूटी थी.

31 And Elijah took twelve stones, one for each tribe of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come and said, “Israel shall be your name.”

31 एलियाह ने, जिस याकोब से याहवेह का यह वादा था, “तुम्हारे नाम इस्राएल होगा,” उस याकोब के पुत्रों के गोत्रों की गिनती के अनुसार बारह पत्थर इकट्‍ठे किए थे.

32 And with the stones, Elijah built an altar in the name of the LORD. Then he dug a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed.

32 एलियाह ने इन बारह पत्थरों को लेकर याहवेह के सम्मान में एक वेदी बनाई. इसके बाद उन्होंने वेदी के चारों ओर ऐसी गहरी नाली खोद दी, जिसमें लगभग ग्यारह किलो बीज समा सकता था.

33 Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull, placed it on the wood,

33 फिर उन्होंने लकड़ी काटकर वेदी पर सजाकर रख दी और बछड़े को टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर लकड़ियों पर सजा दिया. इसके बाद उन्होंने उन्हें आदेश दिया, “चार घड़े जल से भरकर सारा जल होमबलि और लकड़ियों पर उंडेल दो.”

34 and said, “Fill four waterpots and pour the water on the offering and on the wood.” “Do it a second time,” he said, and they did it a second time. “Do it a third time,” he said, and they did it a third time.

34 फिर उन्होंने कहा, “यही एक बार फिर करो.” उन्होंने वैसा ही किया. फिर एलियाह ने कहा, “यही एक बार फिर करो.” उन्होंने यह सब तीसरी बार भी किया.

35 So the water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

35 जल वेदी के चारों ओर बह निकला, और नालियां तक जल से भर गईं.

36 At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet approached the altar and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and have done all these things at Your command.

36 शाम की बलि चढ़ाने के समय भविष्यद्वक्ता एलियाह ने वेदी के निकट आकर यह दोहाई दी, “याहवेह, अब्राहाम, यित्सहाक और याकोब के परमेश्वर, आज यह सबको पता चल जाए कि इस्राएल देश में परमेश्वर सिर्फ आप ही हैं, और यह भी कि मैं आपका सेवक हूं, और यह सब मैंने सिर्फ आपके ही आदेश पर किया है.

37 Answer me, O LORD! Answer me, so that this people will know that You, the LORD, are God, and that You have turned their hearts back again.”

37 याहवेह, मुझे उत्तर दीजिए, मुझे उत्तर दीजिए, कि ये लोग जान जाएं कि आप, याहवेह, ही परमेश्वर हैं, और आपने ही उनके हृदय अपनी ओर दोबारा फेर लिए हैं.”

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water in the trench.

38 यह पूरा होते ही याहवेह द्वारा भेजी गई आग गिरी! उससे होमबलि, लकड़ियां, पत्थर और धूल, सभी कुछ भस्म हो गया, और आग नाली में भरा जल चट कर गई.

39 When all the people saw this, they fell facedown and said, “The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!”

39 जब उन सबने यह सब देखा, वे मुंह के बल ज़मीन पर गिरकर यह स्वीकारने लगे, “याहवेह ही परमेश्वर हैं, याहवेह ही परमेश्वर हैं.”

40 Then Elijah ordered them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let a single one escape.” So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered them there.

40 एलियाह ने उन्हें आदेश दिया, “बाल के भविष्यवक्ताओं को पकड़ लो; एक भी बचने न पाए.” उन्होंने उन्हें पकड़ लिया. एलियाह उन्हें कीशोन नाले पर ले गए और वहां उन सबको मार दिया.

41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”

41 एलियाह ने अहाब से कहा, “उठिए, और भोजन कर लीजिए. मुझे मूसलाधार बारिश की आवाज सुनाई दे रही है.”

42 So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah climbed to the summit of Carmel, bent down on the ground, and put his face between his knees.

42 तब अहाब भोजन करने चला गया. एलियाह कर्मेल पर्वत के शिखर पर चले गए. उन्होंने भूमि की ओर झुककर अपने चेहरे को घुटनों में छिपा लिया.

43 “Go and look toward the sea,” he said to his servant. So the servant went and looked, and he said, “There is nothing there.” Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”

43 और अपने सेवक को आदेश दिया, “जाकर समुद्र की दिशा में देखते रहो.” उसने जाकर देखा और सूचना दी. “वहां तो कुछ भी नहीं है!” एलियाह ने यह आदेश सात बार दिया “जाकर फिर देखो!”

44 On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.” And Elijah replied, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”

44 सातवीं बार सेवक ने सूचना दी, “देखिए-देखिए! मनुष्य की बांह के समान बादल का एक छोटा टुकड़ा समुद्र की सतह से उठ रहा है.” एलियाह ने सेवक को आदेश दिया, “जाकर अहाब से कहो, ‘अपना रथ तैयार कर पर्वत से नीचे उतर जाइए, कहीं ऐसा न हो कि आप बारिश में घिर जाएं.’”

45 Meanwhile, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain began to fall. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel.

45 कुछ ही देर बाद आकाश बादलों से काला हो गया, क्योंकि हवा बहने लगी थी और मूसलाधार बारिश शुरू हो गई. अहाब रथ पर येज़्रील चला गया.

46 And the hand of the LORD came upon Elijah, and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

46 याहवेह की कृपादृष्टि में एलियाह ने ऐसा बल पाया, कि उन्होंने अपने ढीले कपड़े समेटे और कमर कसकर दौड़ते हुए अहाब के रथ से आगे निकलकर येज़्रील तक पहुंच गए.
