1 Timothy 6

1 All who are under the yoke of slavery should regard their masters as fully worthy of honor, so that God’s name and our teaching will not be discredited.

1 Kristittyjen orjien pitää kunnioittaa omistajiaan. Jos Kristuksen omat ovat huonoja työntekijöitä, ihmiset saavat aiheen pitää pilkkanaan Jumalan nimeä ja kristillistä opetusta.

2 Those who have believing masters should not show disrespect because they are brothers, but should serve them all the more, since those receiving their good service are beloved believers. Teach and encourage these principles.

2 Ei se, että työnantaja on kristitty, anna työntekijälle oikeutta laiskotteluun. Pikemminkin silloin on tehtävä työtä erityisen innokkaasti, sillä kysymys on uskonveljen auttamisesta. Opeta tällä tavoin ja kehota kaikkia toimimaan näin.

3 If anyone teaches another doctrine and disagrees with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and with godly teaching,

3 Jotkut voivat olla eri mieltä eivätkä noudata Jeesuksen järkevää ja terveellistä opetusta, joka on kristillisen elämän perusta.

4 he is conceited and understands nothing. Instead, he has an unhealthy interest in controversies and disputes about words, out of which come envy, strife, abusive talk, evil suspicions,

4 Se, joka muuta opettaa, on sekä ylpeä että ymmärtämätön. Hän vain saa aikaan kinastelua, joka taas johtaa kateuteen ja riitoihin. Lopputuloksena on parjausta, syyttelyä ja epäluuloja.

5 and constant friction between men of depraved mind who are devoid of the truth. These men regard godliness as a means of gain.

5 Nämä kiistelijät, joiden mielen synti on vääristänyt, eivät enää tiedä, mikä on totta. He yrittävät saada vain taloudellista hyötyä kristillisyydestä. Pysy heistä erossa.

6 Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain.

6 Haluatko todellista rikkautta? Jos olet onnellinen uskossasi, olet jo rikas.

7 For we brought nothing into the world, so we cannot carry anything out of it.

7 Kun tulimme tähän maailmaan, emme tuoneet mukanamme rahaa, emmekä saa täältä penniäkään mukaamme, kun kuolemme.

8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.

8 Siksi meidän pitäisi olla tyytyväisiä, jos meillä vain on tarpeeksi ruokaa ja vaatteita.

9 Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation and become ensnared by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.

9 Ne, jotka haluaisivat olla rikkaita, ryhtyvät helposti hankkimaan rahaa väärin keinoin. Näin he joutuvat turmioon ja päätyvät lopulta kadotukseen.

10 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. By craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

10 Rahanhimo on ensimmäinen askel moneen syntiin. Jotkut on rahanahneus saanut jopa luopumaan Jumalasta, ja näin he ovat joutuneet monenlaiseen tuskaan.

11 But you, O man of God, flee from these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.

11 Timoteus, sinä kuulut Jumalalle! Älä sinä ryhdy mihinkään pahaan, vaan pyri tekemään sitä, mikä on hyvää ja oikeaa. Opi luottamaan Kristukseen ja rakastamaan muita. Ole kärsivällinen ja ystävällinen.

12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made the good confession before many witnesses.

12 Taistele aina Jumalan puolella. Pidä lujasti kiinni ikuisesta elämästä, jonka Jumala on antanut sinulle. Olethan niin selkein sanoin ja monen todistajan kuullen tunnustanut uskosi.

13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who made the good confession in His testimony before Pontius Pilate:

13 Käsken sinua Jumalan edessä, joka on elämän antaja, ja Jeesuksen Kristuksen edessä, joka oli rohkea todistaja Pontius Pilatuksen luona:

14 Keep this commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ,

14 tee kaikki, mitä Herra on käskenyt, niin ettei sinua voida syyttää mistään siihen päivään saakka, jona Herra Jeesus Kristus palaa.

15 which the blessed and only Sovereign One—the King of kings and Lord of lords—will bring about in His own time.

15 Kun oikea aika on tullut, antaa armahtava ja kaikkivaltias Jumala, kuninkaiden Kuningas ja herrojen Herra, Kristuksen ilmestyä taivaasta.

16 He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

16 Herra ei koskaan kuole. Hän elää niin huikaisevan valon keskellä, ettei yksikään ihminen voi mennä hänen lähelleen. Kukaan ei ole koskaan nähnyt häntä eikä voi tulevaisuudessakaan nähdä. Hänelle kuuluvat ikuisiksi ajoiksi kunnia, voima ja valta. Aamen.

17 Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be conceited and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who richly provides all things for us to enjoy.

17 Sano niille, jotka nyt ovat rikkaita, ettei heidän kannata olla ylpeitä eikä luottaa rahoihinsa, sillä he voivat ne menettää. Luottakoot sen sijaan elävään Jumalaan, joka antaa meille runsain mitoin kaikkea mitä tarvitsemme.

18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, and to be generous and ready to share,

18 Kehota heitä tekemään varallisuudellaan hyvää. Silloin heidän rikkautenaan ovat hyvät työt. Heidän tulee iloisesti jakaa puutteessa eläville sitä, mitä Jumala on heille antanut.

19 treasuring up for themselves a firm foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

19 Näin he keräävät itselleen todellisen aarteen taivaaseen – se on ikuisuutta ajatellen ainoa varma sijoitus!

20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid irreverent, empty chatter and the opposing arguments of so-called “knowledge,”

20 Timoteus, älä lyö laimin tehtäviä, jotka Jumala on sinulle uskonut. Älä rupea kiistelemään niiden kanssa, jotka kehuvat tietävänsä asiat – vaikka juuri tietoa heiltä puuttuu.

21 which some have professed and thus swerved away from the faith. Grace be with you all.

21 Jotkut heistä eivät tunne tärkeintä elämässä: he eivät tunne Jumalaa. Toivotan hänen armoaan teille kaikille.
