| BSB 1 Then we turned back and headed for the wilderness by way of the Red Sea, as the LORD had instructed me, and for many days we wandered around Mount Seir. | WEB 1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as Yahweh spoke to me; and we encircled Mount Seir many days. |
| BSB 2 At this time the LORD said to me, | WEB 2 Yahweh spoke to me, saying, |
| BSB 3 “You have been wandering around this hill country long enough; turn to the north | WEB 3 “You have encircled this mountain long enough. Turn northward. |
| BSB 4 and command the people: ‘You will pass through the territory of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so you must be very careful. | WEB 4 Command the people, saying, ‘You are to pass through the border of your brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore be careful. |
| BSB 5 Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even a footprint, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as his possession. | WEB 5 Don’t contend with them; for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession. |
| BSB 6 You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.’” | WEB 6 You shall purchase food from them for money, that you may eat. You shall also buy water from them for money, that you may drink.’” |
| BSB 7 Indeed, the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these forty years, and you have lacked nothing. | WEB 7 For Yahweh your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years, Yahweh your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing. |
| BSB 8 So we passed by our brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion-geber, and traveled along the road of the Wilderness of Moab. | WEB 8 So we passed by from our brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion Geber. We turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab. |
| BSB 9 Then the LORD said to me, “Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.” | WEB 9 Yahweh said to me, “Don’t bother Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give you any of his land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the children of Lot for a possession.” |
| BSB 10 (The Emites used to live there, a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites. | WEB 10 (The Emim lived there before, a great and numerous people, and tall as the Anakim. |
| BSB 11 Like the Anakites, they were also regarded as Rephaim, though the Moabites called them Emites. | WEB 11 These also are considered to be Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim. |
| BSB 12 The Horites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land that the LORD gave them as their possession.) | WEB 12 The Horites also lived in Seir in the past, but the children of Esau succeeded them. They destroyed them from before them, and lived in their place, as Israel did to the land of his possession, which Yahweh gave to them.) |
| BSB 13 “Now arise and cross over the Brook of Zered.” So we crossed over the Brook of Zered. | WEB 13 “Now rise up and cross over the brook Zered.” We went over the brook Zered. |
| BSB 14 The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the Brook of Zered was thirty-eight years, until that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. | WEB 14 The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea until we had come over the brook Zered were thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as Yahweh swore to them. |
| BSB 15 Indeed, the LORD’s hand was against them, to eliminate them from the camp, until they had all perished. | WEB 15 Moreover Yahweh’s hand was against them, to destroy them from the middle of the camp, until they were consumed. |
| BSB 16 Now when all the fighting men among the people had died, | WEB 16 So, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people, |
| BSB 17 the LORD said to me, | WEB 17 Yahweh spoke to me, saying, |
| BSB 18 “Today you are going to cross the border of Moab at Ar. | WEB 18 “You are to pass over Ar, the border of Moab, today. |
| BSB 19 But when you get close to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the Ammonites. I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their possession.” | WEB 19 When you come near the border of the children of Ammon, don’t bother them, nor contend with them; for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession, because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.” |
| BSB 20 (That too was regarded as the land of the Rephaim, who used to live there, though the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. | WEB 20 (That also is considered a land of Rephaim. Rephaim lived there in the past, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, |
| BSB 21 They were a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites. But the LORD destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place, | WEB 21 a great people, many, and tall, as the Anakim; but Yahweh destroyed them from before Israel, and they succeeded them, and lived in their place, |
| BSB 22 just as He had done for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day. | WEB 22 as he did for the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place even to this day. |
| BSB 23 And the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, were destroyed by the Caphtorites, who came out of Caphtor and settled in their place.) | WEB 23 Then the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.) |
| BSB 24 “Arise, set out, and cross the Arnon Valley. See, I have delivered into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle. | WEB 24 “Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle. |
| BSB 25 This very day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon all the nations under heaven. They will hear the reports of you and tremble in anguish because of you.” | WEB 25 Today I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole sky, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.” |
| BSB 26 So from the Wilderness of Kedemoth I sent messengers with an offer of peace to Sihon king of Heshbon, saying, | WEB 26 I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, |
| BSB 27 “Let us pass through your land; we will stay on the main road. We will not turn to the right or to the left. | WEB 27 “Let me pass through your land. I will go along by the highway. I will turn neither to the right hand nor to the left. |
| BSB 28 You can sell us food to eat and water to drink in exchange for silver. Only let us pass through on foot, | WEB 28 You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink. Just let me pass through on my feet, |
| BSB 29 just as the descendants of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for us, until we cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is giving us.” | WEB 29 as the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me, until I pass over the Jordan into the land which Yahweh our God gives us.” |
| BSB 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as is the case this day. | WEB 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today. |
| BSB 31 Then the LORD said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.” | WEB 31 Yahweh said to me, “Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before you. Begin to possess, that you may inherit his land.” |
| BSB 32 So Sihon and his whole army came out for battle against us at Jahaz. | WEB 32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. |
| BSB 33 And the LORD our God delivered him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and his whole army. | WEB 33 Yahweh our God delivered him up before us; and we struck him, his sons, and all his people. |
| BSB 34 At that time we captured all his cities and devoted to destruction the people of every city, including women and children. We left no survivors. | WEB 34 We took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones. We left no one remaining. |
| BSB 35 We carried off for ourselves only the livestock and the plunder from the cities we captured. | WEB 35 Only the livestock we took for plunder for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities which we had taken. |
| BSB 36 From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the valley, even as far as Gilead, not one city had walls too high for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them. | WEB 36 From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the valley, even to Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. Yahweh our God delivered up all before us. |
| BSB 37 But you did not go near the land of the Ammonites, or the land along the banks of the Jabbok River, or the cities of the hill country, or any place that the LORD our God had forbidden. | WEB 37 Only to the land of the children of Ammon you didn’t come near: all the banks of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill country, and wherever Yahweh our God forbade us. |
