Ephesians 2

1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

1 Ennen teillekin kuului Jumalan tuomio syntienne vuoksi.

2 in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

2 Kuljitte joukon mukana ja olitte täynnä syntiä. Tottelitte saatanaa, pahuuden valtiasta. Hän tekee edelleen työtään niiden sydämessä, jotka ovat Herraa vastaan.

3 All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.

3 Sellaisia mekin ennen olimme. Sisimpämme pahuus tuli näkyviin elämästämme. Itsekkyys ja pahat ajatukset veivät meidät kaikenlaiseen pahuuteen. Teimme pahaa, koska olimme syntyneet pahoiksi, ja niin ansaitsimme Jumalan vihan kuten kaikki muutkin.

4 But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,

4 Mutta Jumala haluaa armahtaa. Hän rakastaa meitä niin paljon,

5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!

5 että vaikka olimme hengellisesti kuolleita ja syntiemme tuomitsemia, hän antoi meille uuden elämän herättäessään Kristuksen kuolleista. Vain hänen armostaan meidät on pelastettu.

6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

6 Hän herätti meidät hengellisestä kuolemasta elämään Kristuksen mukana. Elämme nyt Kristuksen kanssa Jumalan valtakunnassa. Ja tähän asemaan olemme päässeet sen ansiosta, mitä Kristus teki.

7 in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

7 Olemme siis esimerkkeinä siitä, miten äärettömän suuri Jumalan armo on.

8 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God,

8–9 Me pelastumme hänen rakkautensa tähden, joka on tullut osaksemme ilman omaa ansiotamme, kun uskomme Kristukseen. Pelastus ei ole palkkio siitä hyvästä, mitä ehkä olemme tehneet. Kukaan meistä ei voi Jumalan edessä ylpeillä suorituksistaan. Miten suuri lahja pelastuksemme onkaan!

9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.

10 Jumala itse on tehnyt meidät siksi mitä olemme ja antanut meille uuden elämän Kristuksen Jeesuksen yhteydessä. Ennen aikojen alkua hän on myös suunnitellut, että eläisimme tätä uutta elämää muita auttaen.

11 Therefore remember that formerly you who are Gentiles in the flesh and called uncircumcised by the so-called circumcision (that done in the body by human hands)—

11 Älkää unohtako, että olitte kerran pakanoita ja juutalaisten mielestä jumalattomia ja epäpuhtaita. Tosin heidän omakin sisimpänsä oli epäpuhdas huolimatta siitä, että he noudattivat uskonnollisia menoja ja ympärileikkauttivat itsensä merkiksi jumalisuudestaan.

12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.

12 Muistakaa, että ennen olitte täysin erossa Kristuksesta: olitte vailla Jumalan valtakunnan kansalaisoikeuksia, eivätkä Jumalan lupaukset siis kuuluneet teille. Olitte eksyksissä ja elitte ilman Jumalaa ja ilman toivoa.

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.

13 Mutta nyt olette Jeesuksen Kristuksen omia. Vaikka kerran olittekin kaukana Jumalasta, olette nyt päässeet aivan lähelle häntä sen tähden, että Kristus on vuodattanut verensä teidän puolestanne.

14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility

14 Kristus itse on meille tie rauhaan. Hän on saanut aikaan rauhan meidän juutalaisten ja teidän muiden välille tekemällä meistä samaa perhettä: hän on purkanut meitä erottaneen muurin.

15 by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and decrees. He did this to create in Himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace

15 Hänen kuolemansa kumosi koko juutalaisten lakien järjestelmän tienä pelastukseen. Siten hän teki näistä kahdesta toisilleen vihamielisestä ryhmästä yhden uuden kokonaisuuden ja sai näin aikaan rauhan.

16 and reconciling both of them to God in one body through the cross, by which He put to death their hostility.

16 Nyt olemme saman ruumiin jäseniä. Olemme sovinnossa sekä toistemme että Jumalan kanssa. Vihan valta murtui Jeesuksen kuollessa ristillä.

17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

17 Hän on ilmoittanut tämän ilosanoman rauhasta teille pakanoille, jotka olitte Jumalasta hyvin kaukana, ja meille juutalaisille, jotka olimme häntä lähellä.

18 For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

18 Nyt me, sekä juutalaiset että pakanat, saamme Kristuksen tähden lähestyä Isää yhdessä, kun meillä kaikilla on Pyhä Henki.

19 Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household,

19 Nyt te ette enää ole Jumalalle vieraita ettekä hänen valtakuntansa ulkopuolella, vaan kuulutte kaikkien muiden Kristukseen uskovien kanssa Jumalan omaan perheeseen. Olette hänen valtakuntansa kansalaisia.

20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone.

20–21 Te olette Jumalan pyhän temppelin rakennuskiviä, joista nyt rakennetaan apostolien ja profeettojen laskemalle perustukselle. Koko rakennuksen kulmakivenä on itse Jeesus Kristus, johon meidät on liitetty.

21 In Him the whole building is fitted together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

22 And in Him you too are being built together into a dwelling place for God in His Spirit.

22 Näin Pyhä Henki on yhdistänyt teidätkin Kristukseen ja toisiin kristittyihin.
