1 Corinthians 1

1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

1 神のみこころによってキリスト・イエスの使徒として召されたパウロと、兄弟ソステネから、

2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

2 コリントにある神の教会へ。すなわち、私たちの主イエス・キリストの御名を、至る所で呼び求めているすべての人々とともに、聖徒として召され、キリスト・イエスにあってきよめられた方々へ。主は私たちの主であるとともに、そのすべての人々の主です。

3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 私たちの父なる神と主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安があなたがたの上にありますように。

4 I always thank my God for you because of the grace He has given you in Christ Jesus.

4 私は、キリスト・イエスによってあなたがたに与えられた神の恵みのゆえに、あなたがたのことをいつも神に感謝しています。

5 For in Him you have been enriched in every way, in all speech and all knowledge,

5 というのは、あなたがたは、ことばといい、知識といい、すべてにおいて、キリストにあって豊かな者とされたからです。

6 because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you.

6 それは、キリストについてのあかしが、あなたがたの中で確かになったからで、

7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7 その結果、あなたがたはどんな賜物にも欠けるところがなく、また、熱心に私たちの主イエス・キリストの現われを待っています。

8 He will sustain you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

8 主も、あなたがたを、私たちの主イエス・キリストの日に責められるところのない者として、最後まで堅く保ってくださいます。

9 God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

9 神は真実であり、その方のお召しによって、あなたがたは神の御子、私たちの主イエス・キリストとの交わりに入れられました。

10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction.

10 さて、兄弟たち。私は、私たちの主イエス・キリストの御名によって、あなたがたにお願いします。どうか、みなが一致して、仲間割れすることなく、同じ心、同じ判断を完全に保ってください。

11 My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.

11 実はあなたがたのことをクロエの家の者から知らされました。兄弟たち。あなたがたの間には争いがあるそうで、

12 What I mean is this: Individuals among you are saying, “I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos,” “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.”

12 あなたがたはめいめいに、「私はパウロにつく。」「私はアポロに。」「私はケパに。」「私はキリストにつく。」と言っているということです。

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?

13 キリストが分割されたのですか。あなたがたのために十字架につけられたのはパウロでしょうか。あなたがたがバプテスマを受けたのはパウロの名によるのでしょうか。

14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,

14 私は、クリスポとガイオのほか、あなたがたのだれにもバプテスマを授けたことがないことを感謝しています。

15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name.

15 それは、あなたがたが私の名によってバプテスマを受けたと言われないようにするためでした。

16 Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that I do not remember if I baptized anyone else.

16 私はステパナの家族にもバプテスマを授けましたが、そのほかはだれにも授けた覚えはありません。

17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with words of wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

17 キリストが私をお遣わしになったのは、バプテスマを授けさせるためではなく、福音を宣べ伝えさせるためです。それも、キリストの十字架がむなしくならないために、ことばの知恵によってはならないのです。

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

18 十字架のことばは、滅びに至る人々には愚かであっても、救いを受ける私たちには、神の力です。

19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

19 それは、こう書いてあるからです。 「わたしは知恵ある者の知恵を滅ぼし、 賢い者の賢さをむなしくする。」

20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

20 知者はどこにいるのですか。学者はどこにいるのですか。この世の議論家はどこにいるのですか。神は、この世の知恵を愚かなものにされたではありませんか。

21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

21 事実、この世が自分の知恵によって神を知ることがないのは、神の知恵によるのです。それゆえ、神はみこころによって、宣教のことばの愚かさを通して、信じる者を救おうと定められたのです。

22 Jews demand signs and Greeks search for wisdom,

22 ユダヤ人はしるしを要求し、ギリシヤ人は知恵を追求します。

23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,

23 しかし、私たちは十字架につけられたキリストを宣べ伝えるのです。ユダヤ人にとってはつまずき、異邦人にとっては愚かでしょうが、

24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

24 しかし、ユダヤ人であってもギリシヤ人であっても、召された者にとっては、キリストは神の力、神の知恵なのです。

25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

25 なぜなら、神の愚かさは人よりも賢く、神の弱さは人よりも強いからです。

26 Brothers, consider the time of your calling: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth.

26 兄弟たち、あなたがたの召しのことを考えてごらんなさい。この世の知者は多くはなく、権力者も多くはなく、身分の高い者も多くはありません。

27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

27 しかし神は、知恵ある者をはずかしめるために、この世の愚かな者を選び、強い者をはずかしめるために、この世の弱い者を選ばれたのです。

28 He chose the lowly and despised things of the world, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are,

28 また、この世の取るに足りない者や見下されている者を、神は選ばれました。すなわち、有るものをない者のようにするため、無に等しいものを選ばれたのです。

29 so that no one may boast in His presence.

29 これは、神の御前でだれをも誇らせないためです。

30 It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.

30 しかしあなたがたは、神によってキリスト・イエスのうちにあるのです。キリストは、私たちにとって、神の知恵となり、また、義ときよめと、贖いとになられました。

31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

31 まさしく、「誇る者は主にあって誇れ。」と書かれているとおりになるためです。
