Deuteronomy 20

1 When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses, chariots, and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.

1 जब तुम शत्रुओं से युद्ध करो और तुम्हें यह दिखाई दे कि उनके घोड़े, रथ और सैनिक तुमसे गिनती में अधिक हैं, भयभीत न हो जाना, क्योंकि याहवेह, तुम्हारे परमेश्वर जिन्होंने तुम्हें मिस्र देश से निर्गत किया है, तुम्हारे साथ हैं.

2 When you are about to go into battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army,

2 युद्ध के लिए जाने के पूर्व पुरोहित तुम्हारे सामने उपस्थित लोगों से बातें करेगा.

3 saying to them, “Hear, O Israel, today you are going into battle with your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not be alarmed or terrified because of them.

3 वह उनसे कहेगा: “हे इस्राएल: सुनो, आज तुम अपने शत्रुओं से युद्ध के लिए आए हो. मन के कच्चे न हो जाओ. न डरना; न उनके सामने थरथरा जाना,

4 For the LORD your God goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.”

4 क्योंकि याहवेह, तुम्हारे परमेश्वर वह हैं, जो तुम्हारी रक्षा के लिए तुम्हारी ओर से तुम्हारे शत्रुओं से युद्ध करेंगे.”

5 Furthermore, the officers are to address the army, saying, “Has any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man dedicate it.

5 अधिकारी भी सैनिकों से यह कहें: “क्या तुममें से कोई ऐसा है, जिसने घर को नया नया बनाया है, और अब तक उसका समर्पण नहीं कर सका है? वह अपने घर को लौट जाए; नहीं तो उसकी मृत्यु के बाद कोई दूसरा व्यक्ति इसका समर्पण करेगा.

6 Has any man planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy its fruit? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man enjoy its fruit.

6 क्या तुममें से कोई ऐसा व्यक्ति है, जिसने अंगूर का बगीचा लगाया है और वह अब तक अंगूरों को खा नहीं सका है? वह अपने घर को लौट जाए, नहीं तो कोई दूसरा व्यक्ति अंगूरों का उपभोग करने लगेगा.

7 Has any man become pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man marry her.”

7 क्या तुममें कोई ऐसा है, जिसके विवाह की बात चल रही है, मगर विवाह नहीं हुआ? वह अपने घर को लौट जाए, नहीं तो उसकी मृत्यु की स्थिति में कोई अन्य पुरुष उस स्त्री से विवाह कर लेगा.”

8 Then the officers shall speak further to the army, saying, “Is any man afraid or fainthearted? Let him return home, so that the hearts of his brothers will not melt like his own.”

8 इसके बाद अधिकारी सैनिकों से यह भी कहेंगे: “तुममें क्या कोई ऐसा भी है, जो भयभीत और डरपोक है? वह अपने घर को लौट जाए, कि उसके प्रभाव से अन्य भाइयों के भी हृदय पिघल न जाएं.”

9 When the officers have finished addressing the army, they are to appoint commanders to lead it.

9 जब अधिकारी सैनिकों से अपनी बातें कह चुकें, तब वे सैनिकों के ऊपर सेनापति ठहरा दें.

10 When you approach a city to fight against it, you are to make an offer of peace.

10 जब तुम उस नगर के निकट पहुंचो, जिस पर तुम हमला करने पर हो, तब तुम उनके सामने संधि करने का प्रस्ताव रखोगे.

11 If they accept your offer of peace and open their gates, all the people there will become forced laborers to serve you.

11 यदि वह संधि के लिए राज़ी हो जाए, और तुम्हारा स्वागत करे, तब सारे नगरवासी तुम्हारे लिए बेगार होकर तुम्हारी सेवा करेंगे.

12 But if they refuse to make peace with you and wage war against you, lay siege to that city.

12 मगर यदि वह नगर संधि के लिए राज़ी न हो, बल्कि तुमसे युद्ध करने को तैयार हो जाए, तब तुम उसकी घेराबंदी करोगे.

13 When the LORD your God has delivered it into your hand, you must put every male to the sword.

13 जब याहवेह, तुम्हारे परमेश्वर उसे तुम्हारे अधीन कर देंगे, तब तुम हर एक पुरुष का तलवार से वध कर दोगे.

14 But the women, children, livestock, and whatever else is in the city—all its spoil—you may take as plunder, and you shall use the spoil of your enemies that the LORD your God gives you.

14 स्त्रियां, बालक, पशु और नगर की समस्त सामग्री तुम अपने लिए लूट की सामग्री स्वरूप रख लेना. शत्रुओं से प्राप्‍त सामग्री, जो याहवेह, तुम्हारे परमेश्वर तुम्हें प्रदान करेंगे, तुम अपने प्रयोग के लिए रख लोगे.

15 This is how you are to treat all the cities that are far away from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.

15 उन नगरों के प्रति, जो तुम्हारे देश से बहुत दूर रहे, तुम्हारी यही नीति होगी, वे नगर जो तुम्हारे देश से निकटवर्ती हैं, उनके प्रति नहीं.

16 However, in the cities of the nations that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you must not leave alive anything that breathes.

16 सिर्फ उन देशों के नगरों के, जो याहवेह, तुम्हारे परमेश्वर तुम्हें मीरास-स्वरूप प्रदान कर रहे हैं, तुम किसी भी प्राणी को जीवित नहीं छोड़ोगे.

17 For you must devote them to complete destruction—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—as the LORD your God has commanded you,

17 जिन्हें तुम पूरी तरह से नाश कर दोगे, वे ये हैं: हित्ती, अमोरी, कनानी, परिज्ज़ी, हिव्वी और यबूसी; जैसा कि याहवेह, तुम्हारे परमेश्वर का तुम्हारे लिए आदेश है.

18 so that they cannot teach you to do all the detestable things they do for their gods, and so cause you to sin against the LORD your God.

18 इसलिए कि वे तुम्हें अपनी सारी घृणित प्रथाएं सिखा न दें, जो वे अपने उन देवताओं के सम्मान में करते रहे हैं, कि इनका पालन कर तुम याहवेह, अपने परमेश्वर के विरुद्ध पाप करो.

19 When you lay siege to a city for an extended time while fighting against it to capture it, you must not destroy its trees by putting an axe to them, because you can eat their fruit. You must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field human, that you should besiege them?

19 जब तुम युद्ध के उद्देश्य से किसी नगर की घेराबंदी कर रहे हो, कि उसे अधीन कर लो और यह प्रक्रिया लंबी होती जा रही हो, तब तुम वृक्षों का काटना शुरू नहीं करोगे; क्योंकि इनसे तुम्हें तुम्हारा भोजन प्राप्‍त हो सकेगा. तुम वृक्षों को नहीं काटोगे. क्या भूमि से उगा हुआ वृक्ष कोई मनुष्य है, कि तुम उसकी घेराबंदी करो?

20 But you may destroy the trees that you know do not produce fruit. Use them to build siege works against the city that is waging war against you, until it falls.

20 सिर्फ वे वृक्ष ही काटे जा सकते हैं, जिनके संबंध में तुम्हें यह निश्चय है कि वे फलदायी वृक्ष नहीं है, कि तुम इनकी लकड़ी से उस नगर के विरुद्ध उसके गिरने तक घेराबंदी के उपकरणों को बना सको, जो तुमसे युद्ध के लिए उठा है.
