Joshua 3

1 Early the next morning Joshua got up and left Shittim with all the Israelites. They went as far as the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.

1 No dia seguinte, bem cedo, Josué e todo o povo de Israel levantaram o acampamento de Sitim e partiram para o Jordão. Chegaram às margens do rio e acamparam ali antes de atravessar o rio.

2 After three days the officers went through the camp

2 Três dias depois, os oficiais andaram pelo acampamento

3 and commanded the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the Levitical priests, you are to set out from your positions and follow it.

3 dando ao povo as seguintes instruções: “Quando virem a arca da aliança do Senhor, o seu Deus, sendo levada pelos sacerdotes levitas, vão atrás deles.

4 But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled this way before.”

4 Mas é necessário que vocês fiquem cerca de novecentos metros atrás da arca. Cuidado! Não cheguem perto dela!” Vocês nunca estiveram no lugar para onde vamos; por isso eles vão na frente como guias.

5 Then Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you.”

5 Então Josué disse ao povo: “Purifiquem-se, pois amanhã o Senhor vai fazer maravilhas no meio de vocês”.

6 And he said to the priests, “Take the ark of the covenant and go on ahead of the people.” So they carried the ark of the covenant and went ahead of them.

6 Também deu ordens aos sacerdotes: “Peguem a arca da aliança e atravessem o rio diante de nós!” Eles obedeceram.

7 Now the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you just as I was with Moses.

7 Disse o Senhor a Josué: “Hoje vou começar a honrar você na presença de todos. Vou fazer isso para que todo o Israel fique sabendo que eu estou com você, assim como estive com Moisés.

8 Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the waters, stand in the Jordan.’”

8 Diga aos sacerdotes que estão levando a arca da aliança: Quando chegarem às margens do rio Jordão, parem”.

9 So Joshua told the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.”

9 Depois Josué convocou o povo e disse: “Venham todos ouvir o que o Senhor, o seu Deus, disse.

10 He continued, “This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that He will surely drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites.

10 Hoje vocês vão ver que o Deus vivo está no meio de nós e que ele vai expulsar de diante de vocês todos os povos que estão morando nessa terra — os cananeus, os heteus, os heveus, os ferezeus, os girgaseus, os amorreus e os jebuseus.

11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go ahead of you into the Jordan.

11 Vejam, a arca da aliança do Deus vivo, o Senhor de toda a terra, vai atravessar o rio à frente de vocês.

12 Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.

12 Escolham agora doze homens, um de cada tribo, para uma tarefa especial.

13 When the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD—the Lord of all the earth—touch down in the waters of the Jordan, its flowing waters will be cut off and will stand up in a heap.”

13 Quando os sacerdotes que carregam a arca do Senhor, o Senhor de toda a terra, puserem os pés na água que vem de cima, ela vai parar de correr e ficará represada ali!”

14 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carried the ark of the covenant ahead of them.

14 Quando o povo desarmou as tendas para partir, os sacerdotes que levavam a arca da aliança foram adiante do povo.

15 Now the Jordan overflows its banks throughout the harvest season. But as soon as the priests carrying the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge,

15 Estava na época das colheitas, e nesse período o rio Jordão transbordava em ambas as margens. Quando os sacerdotes molharam os pés no Jordão,

16 the flowing water stood still. It backed up as far upstream as Adam, a city in the area of Zarethan, while the water flowing toward the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.

16 as águas que vinham do lado de cima pararam de repente e formou-se uma muralha desde o lugar em que está situada a cidade de Ada, perto de Zaretã. E as águas que corriam para o mar Salgado escoaram completamente. Então o povo atravessou o rio num lugar que dava de frente para a cidade de Jericó.

17 The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel crossed over the dry ground, until the entire nation had crossed the Jordan.

17 Mas os sacerdotes que levavam a arca da aliança do Senhor ficaram parados no meio do rio Jordão; e todo o povo de Israel passou por eles e atravessou o rio sem molhar os pés.
