1 Timothy 1

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,

2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

2 Vastaanottaja: Timoteus. Olet minulle kuin oma poika uskon tähden. Toivotan sinulle Isän Jumalan ja Herran Jeesuksen Kristuksen hyvyyttä, armoa ja rauhaa.

3 As I urged you on my departure to Macedonia, you should stay on at Ephesus to instruct certain men not to teach false doctrines

3–4 Niin kuin Makedoniasta lähtiessäni pyysin, toistan vielä: jää sinne Efesoon. Yritä saada vaikenemaan ne miehet, jotka levittävät väärää oppia. Heidän puheensa ovat mielikuvituksen tuotetta. Hehän väittävät, että ihminen voi pelastua enkelien välityksellä. 4 or devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculation rather than the stewardship of God’s work, which is by faith.

5 The goal of our instruction is the love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith.

5 Toivon, että rakkaus, joka lähtee puhtaasta sydämestä, hallitsisi siellä kaikkia kristittyjä ja että teillä olisi hyvä omatunto ja vilpitön usko.

6 Some have strayed from these ways and turned aside to empty talk.

6 Noilla opettajilla ei ole kumpaakaan. Päivät pitkät he väittelevät toisarvoisista kysymyksistä

7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand what they are saying or that which they so confidently assert.

7 ja haluavat tulla tunnetuiksi Mooseksen lain opettajina. Mutta eihän heillä ole pienintäkään käsitystä siitä, mitä laki pohjimmiltaan merkitsee.

8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it legitimately.

9 We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous, but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for killers of father or mother, for murderers,

9 mutta eihän sitä ole tarkoitettu meille, jotka Jumala on pelastanut. Se on niitä varten, jotka kiroavat Jumalaa ja ihmisiä, hyökkäävät omia vanhempiaan vastaan ja murhaavat.

10 for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave traders and liars and perjurers, and for anyone else who is averse to sound teaching

10–11 Laki tuomitsee homoseksuaalisuuden harjoittajat, ihmisten ryöstäjät, valehtelijat ja kaikki muut, joiden teot sotivat hyvän Jumalan ilosanomaa vastaan, jota minäkin levitän.

11 that agrees with the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, that He considered me faithful and appointed me to service.

12 Olen kiitollinen Herralle Jeesukselle siitä, että hän valitsi myös minut sanomansa viejäksi ja antoi minulle voiman olla uskollinen,

13 I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man; yet because I had acted in ignorance and unbelief, I was shown mercy.

13 vaikka ennen pilkkasin häntä ja vainosin hänen omiaan kaikin mahdollisin tavoin. Mutta Jumala armahti minua, sillä siihen aikaan en vielä tuntenut Kristusta enkä ymmärtänyt mitä tein.

14 And the grace of our Lord overflowed to me, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

14 Kyllä Jumala oli hyvä! Hän antoi minulle uskon ja täytti minut Jeesuksen rakkaudella.

15 This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.

15 Varmaa on – kunpa kaikki saisivat sen tietää! – että Jeesus Kristus tuli maailmaan pelastamaan syntisiä. Ja minä olen noista syntisistä suurin.

16 But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.

16 Mutta Jumala armahti minua, että Jeesus voisi minun avullani näyttää kaikille, miten kärsivällinen hän on pahimpiakin syntisiä kohtaan. Näin he tajuavat, että hekin voivat saada ikuisen elämän, kun uskovat Jeesukseen.

17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

17 Kunnia ja kirkkaus kuuluu ikuisesti Jumalalle. Hän on Kuningas kaikkina aikoina, näkymätön ja kuolematon – ainoa oikea Jumala. Aamen.

18 Timothy, my child, I entrust you with this command in keeping with the previous prophecies about you, so that by them you may fight the good fight,

18 Tällaisen käskyn annan sinulle, poikani Timoteus: Taistele hyvin Herran sodassa – sinua koskevien profetioiden mukaisesti.

19 holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and thereby shipwrecked their faith.

19 Säilytä uskosi ja hyvä omatunto. Ne, jotka eivät ole totelleet omaatuntoaan, vaan ovat tieten tahtoen tehneet väärin, ovat menettäneet uskonsa Kristukseen.

20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

20 Hymeneus ja Aleksander ovat esimerkkejä tästä. Minun oli jätettävä heidät saatanan rangaistaviksi, että he eivät enää tuottaisi Jeesuksen nimelle häpeää.
