Deuteronomy 19

1 When the LORD your God has cut off the nations whose land He is giving you, and when you have driven them out and settled in their cities and houses,

1 “Quando o Senhor, o seu Deus, tiver destruído as nações cuja terra ele está dando a vocês, e quando as expulsarem e habitarem nas suas cidades e nas suas casas,

2 then you are to set apart for yourselves three cities within the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.

2 separem três cidades de refúgio no meio da terra de vocês que o Senhor, o seu Deus, está dando a vocês, para dela tomarem posse.

3 You are to build roads for yourselves and divide into three regions the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that any manslayer can flee to these cities.

3 Dividam a terra em três partes que o Senhor, o seu Deus, está dando a vocês como herança, e escolham uma cidade que seja de fácil acesso, para que o homicida possa chegar lá com segurança.

4 Now this is the situation regarding the manslayer who flees to one of these cities to save his life, having killed his neighbor accidentally, without intending to harm him:

4 “Estes são os casos em que o homicida, ao correr para as cidades de refúgio, terá a vida salva. Isso vale para aquele que sem intenção e sem ódio premeditado matar o seu próximo.

5 If he goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut timber and swings his axe to chop down a tree, but the blade flies off the handle and strikes and kills his neighbor, he may flee to one of these cities to save his life.

5 Por exemplo: Um homem vai com o próximo às matas cortar lenha e, ao levantar o machado para derrubar a árvore, o ferro do machado salta do cabo e atinge o seu amigo e o mata. Ele poderá fugir para uma das cidades de refúgio e viver com segurança.

6 Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue the manslayer in a rage, overtake him if the distance is great, and strike him dead though he did not deserve to die, since he did not intend any harm.

6 Do contrário, o vingador da vítima, enfurecido, poderia perseguir o homicida e alcançá-lo, caso a distância fosse grande demais, e poderia matá-lo, embora ele não fosse culpado de morte, pois não odiava o seu próximo.

7 This is why I am commanding you to set apart for yourselves three cities.

7 Portanto, não deixem de cumprir esta ordem: separem três cidades de refúgio.

8 And if the LORD your God enlarges your territory, as He swore to your fathers, and gives you all the land He promised them,

8 “Se o Senhor, o seu Deus, alargar as fronteiras de Israel, como prometeu sob juramento aos seus antepassados, e lhes der toda a terra que prometeu a eles,

9 and if you carefully keep all these commandments I am giving you today, loving the LORD your God and walking in His ways at all times, then you are to add three more cities to these three.

9 se vocês forem obedientes a todos estes mandamentos que hoje ordeno a vocês, amando o Senhor, o seu Deus, e andando sempre nos caminhos traçados por ele, então vocês terão de separar mais três cidades de refúgio, além destas três.

10 Thus innocent blood will not be shed in the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.

10 Desta maneira, vocês evitarão a morte das pessoas inocentes na sua terra, a qual o Senhor, o seu Deus, está dando a vocês como herança, e não serão responsabilizados por derramamento de sangue injusto.

11 If, however, a man hates his neighbor and lies in wait, attacks him and kills him, and then flees to one of these cities,

11 “Mas, se alguém odiar o seu próximo e, por meio de uma emboscada, atacá-lo, matá-lo e fugir para uma cidade de refúgio,

12 the elders of his city must send for him, bring him back, and hand him over to the avenger of blood to die.

12 as autoridades da cidade onde aconteceu o crime mandarão buscar o assassino e o entregarão nas mãos do vingador da vítima para que morra.

13 You must show him no pity. You are to purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood, that it may go well with you.

13 Não fiquem com pena do criminoso. Eliminem de Israel o derramamento de sangue inocente para que tudo corra bem para vocês.

14 You must not move your neighbor’s boundary marker, which was set up by your ancestors to mark the inheritance you shall receive in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.

14 “Não mudem os marcos de divisa da propriedade do seu próximo, que seus antepassados colocaram na sua herança, na terra que o Senhor, o seu Deus, dá a vocês para tomarem posse dela.

15 A lone witness is not sufficient to establish any wrongdoing or sin against a man, regardless of what offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

15 “Nunca declarem culpada uma pessoa com base no depoimento de uma testemunha só. E isso vale para qualquer tipo de crime ou pecado. Qualquer acusação precisa ser confirmada pelo depoimento de duas ou três testemunhas.

16 If a false witness testifies against someone, accusing him of a crime,

16 “Se uma pessoa der falso testemunho, afirmando que viu alguém praticar alguma transgressão, quando não viu,

17 both parties to the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD, before the priests and judges who are in office at that time.

17 os dois envolvidos na questão serão levados aos sacerdotes e juízes que estiverem exercendo as respectivas funções naquele dia, diante do Senhor.

18 The judges shall investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is proven to be a liar who has falsely accused his brother,

18 Os juízes farão um cuidadoso interrogatório, e se a conclusão for que a testemunha é falsa e que mentiu quando acusou o próximo,

19 you must do to him as he intended to do to his brother. So you must purge the evil from among you.

19 receberá a mesma punição que planejava para o seu irmão. Fazendo assim, vocês eliminam o mal do meio de vocês.

20 Then the rest of the people will hear and be afraid, and they will never again do anything so evil among you.

20 Então os demais vão sentir medo, e nunca mais repetirão esta coisa horrível no meio de vocês.

21 You must show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, and foot for foot.

21 Não tenham pena de uma testemunha falsa! A regra é esta: vida por vida, olho por olho, dente por dente, mão por mão, pé por pé!
