1 Thessalonians 3

1 So when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left on our own in Athens.

1 Lopulta en malttanut enää odottaa, vaan päätin jäädä yksinäni Ateenaan

2 We sent Timothy, our brother and fellow worker for God in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,

2–3 ja lähetin ystäväni ja työtoverini Timoteuksen, joka on Jumalan palvelija, käymään luonanne. Hän tuli rohkaisemaan teitä, ettette menettäisi uskoanne ahdistuksessa, johon olette joutuneet. Tehän tiedätte, että vaikeudet kuuluvat kristityn osaan.

3 so that none of you would be shaken by these trials. For you know that we are destined for this.

4 Indeed, when we were with you, we kept warning you that we would suffer persecution; and as you know, it has come to pass.

4 Siksi varoitimmekin teitä jo etukäteen siitä, mitä on tulossa.

5 For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith, for fear that the tempter had somehow tempted you and that our labor might have been in vain.

5 No niin, en siis jaksanut kauempaa olla epätietoisena siitä, mitä teille kuuluu, ja lähetin Timoteuksen ottamaan asiasta selvää. Pelkäsin, että kiusaaja on saanut teistä voiton ja vaivannäkömme mennyt hukkaan.

6 But just now, Timothy has returned from his visit with the good news about your faith, your love, and the fond memories you have preserved, longing to see us just as we long to see you.

6 Nyt Timoteus on palannut ja tuonut tervetulleita tietoja: uskonne ja rakkautenne ovat yhä kestäviä, muistelette käyntiämme iloisina ja teillä on ikävä meitä niin kuin meilläkin teitä.

7 For this reason, brothers, in all our distress and persecution, we have been reassured about you, because of your faith.

7 Olemme täällä suuressa hädässä ja ahdistuksessa, mutta meitä lohdutti tavattomasti, kun kuulimme, että te olette pysyneet uskollisina Herralle.

8 For now we can go on living, as long as you are standing firm in the Lord.

8 Kestämme mitä tahansa, jos tiedämme teidän pysyvän hänen ominaan.

9 How can we adequately thank God for you in return for our great joy over you in His presence?

9–10 Emme osaa tarpeeksi kiittää Jumalaa teistä ja siitä ilosta, jota olette meille tuottaneet! Rukoilemme jatkuvasti yötä päivää, että pääsisimme tapaamaan teitä ja poistamaan ne puutteet, joita uskossanne vielä on.

10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith.

11 Now may our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you.

11 Pyydämme, että itse Jumala, meidän Isämme, ja Herramme Jeesus lähettäisi meidät luoksenne.

12 And may the Lord cause you to increase and overflow with love for one another and for everyone else, just as our love for you overflows,

12 Pyydämme myös, että Herra antaisi rakkautenne toisianne ja muita ihmisiä kohtaan kasvaa samalla tavoin kuin meidän rakkautemme teihin kasvaa.

13 so that He may establish your hearts in blamelessness and holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints. Amen.

13 Vahvistakoon hän teitä, niin että olette pyhiä ja puhtaita Jumalan ja Isämme edessä, kun Herra Jeesus tulee takaisin omiensa kanssa.
