Ezekiel 18

1 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

1 Algum tempo depois, recebi nova mensagem do Senhor:

2 “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge’?

2 “Por que andam dizendo que em Israel os filhos pagam pelos pecados dos pais?

3 As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.

3 “Tão certo como eu vivo, diz o Soberano, o Senhor, ninguém voltará a citar esse provérbio tão popular em Israel.

4 Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son are Mine. The soul who sins is the one who will die.

4 Pois todos me pertencem. Tanto o pai como o filho me pertencem. A pessoa que pecar é que morrerá.

5 Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just and right:

5 “Imaginem que haja um homem verdadeiramente justo, que pratica a verdade e a justiça.

6 He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her period.

6 Ele não participa das festas imorais realizadas para adorar ídolos nos montes de Israel, não rouba a mulher alheia, nem se deita com mulher no tempo da sua menstruação.

7 He does not oppress another, but restores the pledge to the debtor. He does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.

7 Ele não explora outras pessoas, é paciente com quem lhe deve dinheiro; devolve os objetos deixados como garantia de pagamento da dívida quando os devedores precisam; reparte sua comida com os pobres, e suas roupas com quem anda coberto de farrapos.

8 He does not engage in usury or take excess interest, but he withholds his hand from iniquity and executes true justice between men.

8 Ele empresta seu dinheiro sem cobrar juros, afasta-se das coisas erradas, e não faz diferença entre rico e pobre, poderoso e humilde. Ele trata todos os homens com igual justiça.

9 He follows My statutes and faithfully keeps My ordinances. That man is righteous; surely he will live, declares the Lord GOD.

9 Um homem assim, que obedece às minhas leis, é justo de verdade, e sem dúvida alguma viverá! Palavra do Soberano, o Senhor.

10 Now suppose that man has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these things,

10 “Se esse homem justo tiver um filho ladrão ou assassino, que fizer as maldades que seu pai evitou,

11 though the father has done none of them: Indeed, the son eats at the mountain and defiles his neighbor’s wife.

11 e deixar de lado sua obrigação de fazer o bem — adorando ídolos no alto dos montes, adulterando,

12 He oppresses the poor and needy; he commits robbery and does not restore a pledge. He lifts his eyes to idols; he commits abominations.

12 explorando os fracos e os pobres, roubando, não devolvendo o que foi dado como garantia, adorando imagens e cometendo práticas detestáveis,

13 He engages in usury and takes excess interest. Will this son live? He will not! Since he has committed all these abominations, he will surely die; his blood will be on his own head.

13 cobrando juros altos quando empresta dinheiro — por acaso esse homem viveria às custas da justiça de seu pai? De jeito nenhum! Ele será responsável pela sua própria morte.

14 Now suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father has committed, considers them, and does not do likewise:

14 “Mas, se esse homem pecador tiver um filho capaz de perceber a maldade de seu pai e não cometer os mesmos pecados,

15 He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife.

15 não comer a carne oferecida aos ídolos no alto dos montes, não fizer pedidos às imagens dos falsos deuses, não se contaminar com a mulher do próximo,

16 He does not oppress another, or retain a pledge, or commit robbery. He gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.

16 não explorar seus semelhantes, não guardar consigo o que foi dado como garantia, não roubar, repartir sua comida e suas roupas com os necessitados,

17 He withholds his hand from harming the poor and takes no interest or usury. He keeps My ordinances and follows My statutes. Such a man will not die for his father’s iniquity. He will surely live.

17 ajudar os pobres, não emprestar dinheiro a juros, enfim, se ele cumprir as minhas leis e obedecer aos meus mandamentos, não morrerá pelo fato de seu pai ser um pecador desobediente. Ele viverá; sem dúvida alguma ele viverá.

18 As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what was wrong among his people.

18 Mas seu pai, que é ladrão, explorador, adúltero e perverso, e fez o que era errado no meio do seu povo, será castigado. Ele morrerá por causa de seus pecados!

19 Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son bear the iniquity of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will surely live.

19 “E vocês podem até perguntar: ‘Por que o filho não é castigado pelos pecados do pai?’ Ora! Ele obedeceu aos mandamentos, fez o que é certo e justo e, por isso, sem sombra de dúvida, viverá.

20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. A son will not bear the iniquity of his father, and a father will not bear the iniquity of his son. The righteousness of the righteous man will fall upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked man will fall upon him.

20 Quem vive pecando é que será castigado com a morte. O filho não sofrerá as consequências dos pecados do pai, e o pai não levará a culpa do filho. O justo será recompensado pela sua justiça, e o perverso será castigado pelos seus pecados.

21 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.

21 “Apesar disso, se um homem pecador se arrepender dos pecados que cometeu e passar a obedecer aos meus mandamentos, fazendo o que é certo e justo diante de mim, sem dúvida alguma viverá. Não morrerá por causa dos seus antigos pecados.

22 None of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him. Because of the righteousness he has practiced, he will live.

22 O passado não será lembrado, com todas as suas desobediências e maldades. Ele viverá devido a sua justiça.

23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Lord GOD. Wouldn’t I prefer that he turn from his ways and live?

23 “Vocês acreditam que eu tenho alegria na morte de um perverso?” Palavra do Soberano, o Senhor. “Muito pelo contrário! A minha vontade é que ele abandone os seus maus caminhos e viva.

24 But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, committing the same abominations as the wicked, will he live? None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness and sin he has committed, he will die.

24 “Por outro lado, se uma pessoa que sempre viveu fazendo o que é certo se desviar de sua justiça e se entregar ao pecado, fazendo as mesmas maldades que fazem os perversos, conseguirá ela escapar do castigo? Todas as coisas boas e justas que fez antes serão esquecidas; será castigada com a morte, porque escolheu seguir o caminho do pecado.

25 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is it My way that is unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust?

25 “Agora vocês vão reclamar: ‘O Senhor não está sendo justo no seu julgamento!’ Pense bem, Israel! Quem está sendo injusto, eu ou vocês?

26 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, he will die for this. He will die because of the iniquity he has committed.

26 Se o justo deixa de lado a justiça para viver no pecado, e morre sem se arrepender disso, morrerá por causa do mal que cometeu.

27 But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life.

27 Mas, se uma pessoa que vivia no pecado se arrepender de suas maldades e desobediências, e passar a praticar a justiça, não será castigada com a morte. Ele salvará a sua vida.

28 Because he considered and turned from all the transgressions he had committed, he will surely live; he will not die.

28 Quem considerar os seus pecados e se arrepender deles, será perdoado e viverá; não será castigado com a morte.

29 Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are My ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?

29 Apesar de isso ser uma coisa tão clara, vocês continuam reclamando: ‘O Senhor está sendo injusto no seu julgamento!’ Os seus caminhos é que são injustos, não os meus.

30 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so that your iniquity will not become your downfall.

30 “É por isso que vocês serão julgados, ó povo de Israel. Eu mesmo julgarei cada um segundo as suas próprias ações. Palavra do Soberano, o Senhor. Arrependam-se, abandonem os seus pecados! Essa é a única maneira de escapar ao castigo do pecado e da maldade.

31 Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions you have committed, and fashion for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel?

31 Livrem-se de todos os pecados que vocês vêm cometendo há tanto tempo! Assim vocês ganharão um coração novo e um espírito novo. Para que morrer? Para que ser condenado, ó povo de Israel?

32 For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death, declares the Lord GOD. So repent and live!

32 Eu não tenho prazer na morte de ninguém. Palavra do Soberano, o Senhor. Arrependam-se! Arrependam-se e vivam!”
