1 Corinthians 10

1 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and that they all passed through the sea.

1 Hyvät ystävät, emme saa koskaan unohtaa, millaista kansallamme oli kauan sitten autiomaassa. Jumala antoi pilven kulkea israelilaisten yläpuolella ja auttoi heidät turvallisesti Punaisenmeren halki.

2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

2 Tätä voitaisiin sanoa heidän kasteekseen, jolla he sitoutuivat Mooseksen johdettaviksi.

3 They all ate the same spiritual food

3–4 Ihmeellisesti Jumala piti heistä huolta autiomaassa: Kristus oli heidän kanssaan kuin luja kallio, ja he saivat häneltä hengellistä ruokaa ja juomaa.

4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.

5 Vaikka israelilaiset olivat kokeneet kaiken tämän, useimmat heistä eivät kuitenkaan totelleet Jumalaa, ja hänen oli tuhottava heidät autiomaahan.

6 These things took place as examples to keep us from craving evil things as they did.

6 Tämä esimerkki varoittaa meitä haluamasta sellaista, mikä on pahaa,

7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”

7 ja palvomasta epäjumalia. Vanha testamentti nimittäin kertoo, että »kansa istui syömään ja juomaan ja alkoi sitten tanssia» palvoakseen kultaista vasikkaa.

8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.

8 Entä mitä tapahtui, kun siveetön elämä sai monet miehet valtaansa? Yhtenä päivänä kuoli 23 000 ihmistä.

9 We should not test Christ, as some of them did, and were killed by snakes.

9 Älkää myöskään koetelko Herran kärsivällisyyttä. Muutamat heistä tekivät niin ja kuolivat myrkkykäärmeiden pistoon.

10 And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel.

10 Älkää napisko Jumalaa vastaan, niin kuin jotkut israelilaiset. Jumalan oli lähetettävä enkelinsä tuhoamaan heidät.

11 Now these things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.

11 Kaikki tämä tapahtui, että oppisimme siitä – että nämä esimerkit varoittaisivat meitä. Siksi ne kirjoitettiin muistiinkin, meitä varten, jotka elämme maailmanhistorian loppuaikaa.

12 So the one who thinks he is standing firm should be careful not to fall.

12 Pitäkää siis varanne! Vaikka ajatteletkin: »Minä en koskaan tekisi noin», voit aivan hyvin langeta syntiin.

13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.

13 Muistakaa kuitenkin myös, että mieleenne syöksähtävät pahat halut eivät ole uusia ja ihmeellisiä. Monilla muilla on ennen teitä ollut aivan samoja ongelmia. Mikään kiusaus ei ole voittamaton, sillä Jumala on luvannut, ettei teitä kiusata yli voimienne. Luottakaa häneen, hän pitää lupauksensa. Hän näyttää, miten voitte pysyä kärsivällisinä ja voittaa kiusauksen.

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

14 Rakkaat ystävät, karttakaa sen vuoksi epäjumalanpalvelusta.

15 I speak to reasonable people; judge for yourselves what I say.

15 Olette järkeviä ihmisiä. Arvioikaa siis itse, puhunko totta.

16 Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

16 Kun ehtoollispöydässä pyydämme Herran siunaamaan viinin, se merkitsee, että kaikki, jotka sitä juovat, tulevat osallisiksi Kristuksen veren tuomasta siunauksesta. Se taas, että syömme leipää, merkitsee, että olemme osalliset Kristuksen ruumiista.

17 Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf.

17 Olipa meitä kuinka monta tahansa, syömme samaa leipää ja olemme siis saman ruumiin jäseniä.

18 Consider the people of Israel: Are not those who eat the sacrifices fellow partakers in the altar?

18 Vastaavasti juutalaiset, jotka syövät Jumalalle uhriksi annettua ruokaa, kokevat erityistä yhteyttä.

19 Am I suggesting, then, that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?

19 Mihin tällä oikein pyrin? Väitänkö siis, että epäjumalat, joille pakanat uhraavat, ovat todellisia eläviä jumalia ja että niille uhraaminen on arvokasta? En suinkaan.

20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons.

20 Tarkoitan, että ne, jotka uhraavat ruokaa epäjumalille, joutuvat uhratessaan yhteyteen pahojen henkien eivätkä Jumalan kanssa. En halua, että ainoakaan teistä tulee osalliseksi demoneista, kun syö yhdessä pakanoiden kanssa epäjumalille uhrattua ruokaa.

21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot partake in the table of the Lord and the table of demons too.

21 Ette voi juoda sekä Herran maljasta että paholaisen maljasta ettekä syödä leipää molempien pöydissä.

22 Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

22 Aiotteko suututtaa Herran? Oletteko muka häntä vahvempia?

23 “Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything is edifying.

23 Tietysti voitte vapaasti syödä epäjumalille uhrattua ruokaa mikäli tahdotte. Jumalan laki ei sitä kiellä, mutta tämä ei merkitse, että teidän pitäisi rynnätä näin tekemään. Se voi olla täysin laillista, mutta se ei ehkä ole teille hyväksi.

24 No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.

24 Älkää ajatelko vain itseänne. Ottakaa huomioon myös, mikä on parasta muille.

25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,

25 Valitkaa lihakaupasta mitä lihaa haluatte. Älkää kysykö, onko se mahdollisesti epäjumalille uhrattua, ettei vastaus loukkaisi omaatuntoanne.

26 for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.”

26 Maa kaikkineenhan kuuluu Herralle, ja saatte nauttia sen kaikista antimista.

27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat anything set before you without raising questions of conscience.

27 Jos joku, joka ei ole kristitty, kutsuu teidät kotiinsa aterialle, menkää jos haluatte. Syökää kaikkea, mitä tarjotaan, älkääkä kyselkö mitään ruuasta. Kun ette tiedä ruuan alkuperää, teille ei tule huonoa omaatuntoa.

28 But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience—

28 Mutta jos joku varoittaa teitä, että tuo tai tuo liha on epäjumalille uhrattua, älkää syökö sitä tämän toisen ihmisen omantunnon tähden.

29 the other one’s conscience, I mean, not your own. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else’s conscience?

29 Hänen tunteensa ovat tässä tapauksessa tärkeät, eivät omanne. Ehkä ihmettelet: Miksi jonkun toisen tunteiden täytyy rajoittaa minun käyttäytymistäni?

30 If I partake in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?

30 Jos kiitän Jumalaa ruuasta ja nautin siitä, minkä tähden antaisin jonkun toisen pilata kaiken siksi, että hänen mielestään olen väärässä?

31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.

31 Koska meidän on tehtävä kaikki Jumalan kunniaksi – jopa syötävä ja juotava hänen kunniakseen.

32 Do not become a stumbling block, whether to Jews or Greeks or the church of God—

32 Älkää antako sen enempää juutalaisille, pakanoille kuin kristityillekään loukkaantumisen aihetta.

33 as I also try to please everyone in all I do. For I am not seeking my own good, but the good of many, that they may be saved.

33 Minäkin yritän olla loukkaamatta ketään enkä ajattele omaa parastani vaan toisten parasta, että he pelastuisivat. Teidän pitäisi seurata minun esimerkkiäni, niin kuin minä seuraan Kristusta.
