1 Thessalonians 5

1 Now about the times and seasons, brothers, we do not need to write to you.

1 Milloin kaikki tämä sitten tapahtuu? Tähän kysymykseen minun ei tarvitse vastata,

2 For you are fully aware that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

2 sillä te olette hyvin selvillä, ettei sitä tiedä kukaan. Herran päivä tulee odottamatta kuin varas yöllä.

3 While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

3 Kun ihmiset sanovat: »Kaikki on hyvin, nyt on rauhallista», tuho yllättää heidät äkkiä kuin synnytyskivut odottavan äidin. Ei ole paikkaa, mihin he voisivat paeta.

4 But you, brothers, are not in the darkness so that this day should overtake you like a thief.

4 Mutta te tiedätte näistä asioista, eikä Herran tulo pääse yllättämään teitä.

5 For you are all sons of the light and sons of the day; we do not belong to the night or to the darkness.

5 Tehän olette päivän lapsia ja elätte valossa – ette yön pimeydessä.

6 So then, let us not sleep as the others do, but let us remain awake and sober.

6 Olkaa siis varuillanne älkääkä nukkuko niin kuin muut. Odottakaa hänen tuloaan ja pysykää raittiina.

7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.

7 Niillä, jotka nukkuvat, ja niillä, jotka juopottelevat, on aina yö,

8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and the helmet of our hope of salvation.

8 mutta me, jotka elämme valossa, pysymme raittiina. Usko ja rakkaus suojelevat meitä kuin panssari sotilasta, ja kypäränämme on pelastumisen toivo.

9 For God has not appointed us to suffer wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 Jumala ei halunnut, että me joutuisimme kokemaan hänen vihansa, vaan lähetti Jeesuksen pelastamaan meidät.

10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him.

10 Jeesus kuoli puolestamme. Saamme elää hänen kanssaan ikuisesti riippumatta siitä, olemmeko hänen palatessaan elossa vai jo kuolleita.

11 Therefore encourage and build one another up, just as you are already doing.

11 Kannustakaa ja vahvistakaa edelleen toisianne.

12 But we ask you, brothers, to acknowledge those who work diligently among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you.

12 Arvostakaa seurakuntanne johtajia, jotka tekevät työtä keskuudessanne ja opettavat teitä.

13 In love, hold them in highest regard because of their work. Live in peace with one another.

13 Osoittakaa heille aitoa rakkautta, sillä he haluavat auttaa teitä. Ja muistakaa: ei riitoja!

14 And we urge you, brothers, to admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, and be patient with everyone.

14 Varoittakaa, rakkaat veljet, niitä, jotka eivät alistu kuriin. Rohkaiskaa masentuneita, pitäkää huolta heikoista ja suhtautukaa kaikkiin kärsivällisesti.

15 Make sure that no one repays evil for evil. Always pursue what is good for one another and for all people.

15 Katsokaa, ettei kukaan kosta pahaa pahalla, vaan yrittäkää aina tehdä hyvää toisillenne ja myös ulkopuolisille.

16 Rejoice at all times.

16 Olkaa aina iloisia.

17 Pray without ceasing.

17 Rukoilkaa jatkuvasti.

18 Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

18 Jumala tahtoo, että te, jotka kuulutte Jeesukselle, kiitätte häntä aina, tapahtui mitä tahansa.

19 Do not extinguish the Spirit.

19 Älkää sammuttako Pyhää Henkeä.

20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt,

20 Älkää väheksykö niiden puhetta, jotka profetoivat.

21 but test all things. Hold fast to what is good.

21 Mutta tutkikaa, onko heidän sanomansa oikea, ennen kuin hyväksytte sen.

22 Abstain from every form of evil.

22 Pysykää erossa kaikesta pahuudesta.

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your entire spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

23 Rauhan Jumala itse puhdistakoon teidät kokonaan. Toivomme, että henkenne, sielunne ja ruumiinne pysyisivät vahvoina ja tahrattomina siihen asti, kunnes Jeesus Kristus tulee takaisin.

24 The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.

24 Jumala, joka otti teidät lapsikseen, suorittaa työnsä loppuun, niin kuin on luvannut.

25 Brothers, pray for us as well.

25 Rukoilkaa puolestamme, rakkaat ystävät.

26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

26 Tervehtikää sydämellisesti veljiä puolestani.

27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.

27 Käsken teitä Jeesuksen nimessä lukemaan tämän kirjeeni kaikille kristityille.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

28 Olkaa kaikki osallisia Jeesuksen Kristuksen lahjoista!
