| BSB 1 At this time a man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. | KJV 1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. |
| BSB 2 (Mary, whose brother Lazarus was sick, was to anoint the Lord with perfume and wipe His feet with her hair.) | KJV 2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) |
| BSB 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one You love is sick.” | KJV 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. |
| BSB 4 When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” | KJV 4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. |
| BSB 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. | KJV 5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. |
| BSB 6 So on hearing that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was for two days, | KJV 6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. |
| BSB 7 and then He said to the disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” | KJV 7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judæa again. |
| BSB 8 “Rabbi,” they replied, “the Jews just tried to stone You, and You are going back there?” | KJV 8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? |
| BSB 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the daytime, he will not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world. | KJV 9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. |
| BSB 10 But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble, because he has no light.” | KJV 10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. |
| BSB 11 After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.” | KJV 11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. |
| BSB 12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get better.” | KJV 12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. |
| BSB 13 They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus. | KJV 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. |
| BSB 14 So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, | KJV 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. |
| BSB 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” | KJV 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. |
| BSB 16 Then Thomas called Didymus said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.” | KJV 16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. |
| BSB 17 When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already spent four days in the tomb. | KJV 17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. |
| BSB 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, a little less than two miles away, | KJV 18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: |
| BSB 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them in the loss of their brother. | KJV 19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. |
| BSB 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet Him, but Mary stayed at home. | KJV 20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. |
| BSB 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. | KJV 21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. |
| BSB 22 But even now I know that God will give You whatever You ask of Him.” | KJV 22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. |
| BSB 23 “Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her. | KJV 23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. |
| BSB 24 Martha replied, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” | KJV 24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. |
| BSB 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. | KJV 25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: |
| BSB 26 And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” | KJV 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? |
| BSB 27 “Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.” | KJV 27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. |
| BSB 28 After Martha had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside to tell her, “The Teacher is here and is asking for you.” | KJV 28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. |
| BSB 29 And when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him. | KJV 29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. |
| BSB 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him. | KJV 30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. |
| BSB 31 When the Jews who were in the house consoling Mary saw how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. | KJV 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. |
| BSB 32 When Mary came to Jesus and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” | KJV 32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. |
| BSB 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. | KJV 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, |
| BSB 34 “Where have you put him?” He asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they answered. | KJV 34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. |
| BSB 35 Jesus wept. | KJV 35 Jesus wept. |
| BSB 36 Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!” | KJV 36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! |
| BSB 37 But some of them asked, “Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind also have kept Lazarus from dying?” | KJV 37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? |
| BSB 38 Jesus, once again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. | KJV 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. |
| BSB 39 “Take away the stone,” Jesus said. “Lord, by now he stinks,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man. “It has already been four days.” | KJV 39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. |
| BSB 40 Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” | KJV 40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? |
| BSB 41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. | KJV 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. |
| BSB 42 I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this for the benefit of the people standing here, so they may believe that You sent Me.” | KJV 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. |
| BSB 43 After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” | KJV 43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. |
| BSB 44 The man who had been dead came out with his hands and feet bound in strips of linen, and his face wrapped in a cloth. “Unwrap him and let him go,” Jesus told them. | KJV 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. |
| BSB 45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in Him. | KJV 45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. |
| BSB 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. | KJV 46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. |
| BSB 47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs. | KJV 47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. |
| BSB 48 If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” | KJV 48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. |
| BSB 49 But one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! | KJV 49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, |
| BSB 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.” | KJV 50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. |
| BSB 51 Caiaphas did not say this on his own. Instead, as high priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation, | KJV 51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; |
| BSB 52 and not only for the nation, but also for the scattered children of God, to gather them together into one. | KJV 52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. |
| BSB 53 So from that day on they plotted to kill Him. | KJV 53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. |
| BSB 54 As a result, Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but He withdrew to a town called Ephraim in an area near the wilderness. And He stayed there with the disciples. | KJV 54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. |
| BSB 55 Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many people went up from the country to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover. | KJV 55 And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. |
| BSB 56 They kept looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple courts, “What do you think? Will He come to the feast at all?” | KJV 56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? |
| BSB 57 But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him. | KJV 57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him. |
