Matthew 23

1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples:

1 इसके बाद येशु ने भीड़ और शिष्यों को संबोधित करते हुए कहा,

2 “The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.

2 “फ़रीसियों और शास्त्रियों ने स्वयं को मोशेह के पद पर आसीन कर रखा है.

3 So practice and observe everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.

3 इसलिये उनकी सभी शिक्षाओं के अनुरूप स्वभाव तो रखो किंतु उनके द्वारा किए जा रहे कामों को बिलकुल न मानना क्योंकि वे स्वयं ही वह नहीं करते, जो वह कहते हैं.

4 They tie up heavy, burdensome loads and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

4 वे लोगों के कंधों पर भारी बोझ लाद तो देते हैं किंतु उसे हटाने के लिए स्वयं एक उंगली तक नहीं लगाना चाहते.

5 All their deeds are done for men to see. They broaden their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.

5 “वे सभी काम लोगों का ध्यान आकर्षित करने के उद्देश्य से ही करते हैं. वे उन पट्टियों को चौड़ा करते हैं, तथा वे ऊपरी वस्त्र की झालर को भी बढ़ाते जाते हैं.

6 They love the places of honor at banquets, the chief seats in the synagogues,

6 दावतों में मुख्य स्थान, यहूदी सभागृहों में मुख्य आसन,

7 the greetings in the marketplaces, and the title of ‘Rabbi’ by which they are addressed.

7 नगर चौक में लोगों के द्वारा सम्मानपूर्ण अभिनंदन तथा रब्बी कहलाना ही इन्हें प्रिय है.

8 But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers.

8 “किंतु तुम स्वयं के लिए रब्बी कहलाना स्वीकार न करना क्योंकि तुम्हारा शिक्षक मात्र एक हैं और तुम सब आपस में भाई हो.

9 And do not call anyone on earth your father, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.

9 पृथ्वी पर तुम किसी को अपना पिता न कहना. क्योंकि तुम्हारा पिता मात्र एक हैं, जो स्वर्ग में हैं

10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Christ.

10 और न तुम स्वयं के लिए स्वामी संबोधन स्वीकार करना क्योंकि तुम्हारा स्वामी मात्र एक हैं—मसीह.

11 The greatest among you shall be your servant.

11 अवश्य है कि तुममें जो बड़ा बनना चाहे वह तुम्हारा सेवक हो.

12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

12 जो कोई स्वयं को बड़ा करता है, उसे छोटा बना दिया जाएगा और वह, जो स्वयं को छोटा बनाता है, बड़ा किया जाएगा.”

13 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter.

13 “धिक्कार है तुम पर पाखंडी, फ़रीसियो, शास्त्रियो! जनसाधारण के लिए तो तुम स्वर्ग-राज्य के द्वार बंद कर देते हो. तुम न तो स्वयं इसमें प्रवेश करते हो और न ही किसी अन्य को प्रवेश करने देते हो. [

14 धिक्कार है तुम पर पाखंडी, फ़रीसियो, शास्त्रियो! तुम लम्बी-लम्बी प्रार्थनाओं का ढोंग करते हुए विधवाओं की संपत्ति निगल जाते हो. इसलिये अधिक होगा तुम्हारा दंड.]

15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You traverse land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.

15 “धिक्कार है तुम पर पाखंडी, फ़रीसियो, शास्त्रियो! तुम एक व्यक्ति को अपने मत में लाने के लिए लम्बी-लम्बी जल और थल यात्राएं करते हो. उसके तुम्हारे मत में सम्मिलित हो जाने पर तुम उसे नर्क की आग के दंड का दो गुणा अधिकारी बना देते हो.

16 Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’

16 “धिक्कार है तुम पर अंधे अगुओं! तुम जो यह शिक्षा देते हो, ‘यदि कोई मंदिर की शपथ लेता है तो उसका कोई महत्व नहीं किंतु यदि कोई मंदिर के सोने की शपथ लेता है तो उसके लिए प्रतिज्ञा पूरी करना ज़रूरी हो जाता है.’

17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes it sacred?

17 अरे मूर्खो और अंधों! अधिक महत्वपूर्ण क्या है—सोना या वह मंदिर जिससे वह सोना पवित्र होता है?

18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’

18 इसी प्रकार तुम कहते हो, ‘यदि कोई वेदी की शपथ लेता है तो उसका कोई महत्व नहीं किंतु यदि कोई वेदी पर चढ़ाई भेंट की शपथ लेता है तो उसके लिए अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पूरी करना ज़रूरी है.’

19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes it sacred?

19 अरे अंधों! अधिक महत्वपूर्ण क्या है, वेदी पर चढ़ाई भेंट या वेदी जिससे भेंट पवित्र होती है?

20 So then, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.

20 इसलिये जो कोई वेदी की शपथ लेता है, वह वेदी तथा वेदी पर समर्पित भेंट दोनों ही की शपथ लेता है.

21 And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the One who dwells in it.

21 जो कोई मंदिर की शपथ लेता है, वह मंदिर तथा उनकी, जो इसमें रहते हैं, दोनों ही की शपथ लेता है.

22 And he who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the One who sits on it.

22 इसी प्रकार जो कोई स्वर्ग की शपथ लेता है, वह परमेश्वर के सिंहासन की तथा उनकी जो उस पर बैठा हैं, दोनों ही की शपथ लेता है.

23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay tithes of mint, dill, and cumin. But you have disregarded the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

23 “धिक्कार है तुम पर पाखंडी, फ़रीसियो, शास्त्रियो! तुम पुदीना, सौंफ़ तथा ज़ीरा का दसवां अंश तो अवश्य देते हो किंतु व्यवस्था की कहीं अधिक गंभीर बातों का अर्थात् न्याय, कृपा तथा विश्वास की उपेक्षा करते हो. यही वे बातें हैं जिनका पूरा करना आवश्यक था—दूसरों की अनदेखी किए बिना.

24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

24 अंधे अगुओं! तुम मक्खी तो छान कर निकाल फेंकते हो किंतु ऊंट निगल जाते हो!

25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

25 “धिक्कार है तुम पर पाखंडी, फ़रीसियो, शास्त्रियो! प्याले तथा बर्तन को बाहर से तो तुम अच्छी तरह से साफ़ करते हो किंतु अंदर लालच तथा असंयम से भरा है.

26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, so that the outside may become clean as well.

26 अंधे फ़रीसियो! पहले प्याले तथा बर्तन को भीतर से साफ़ करो कि वे बाहर से भी साफ़ हो जाएं.

27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of impurity.

27 “धिक्कार है तुम पर पाखंडी, फ़रीसियो, शास्त्रियो! तुम कब्रों के समान हो, जो बाहर से तो सजायी संवारी जाती हैं किंतु भीतर मरे हुए व्यक्ति की हड्डियां तथा सब प्रकार की गंदगी भरी होती है.

28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to be righteous, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

28 तुम भी बाहर से तो मनुष्यों को धर्मी दिखाई देते हो किंतु तुम्हारे अंदर कपट तथा अधर्म भरा हुआ है.

29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous.

29 “धिक्कार है तुम पर पाखंडी, फ़रीसियो, शास्त्रियो! तुम भविष्यद्वक्ताओं की कब्रें संवारते हो तथा धर्मी व्यक्तियों के स्मारक को सजाते हो और कहते हो

30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

30 ‘यदि हम अपने पूर्वजों के समय में होते, हम इन भविष्यद्वक्ताओं की हत्या के साझी न होते.’

31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of those who murdered the prophets.

31 यह कहकर तुम स्वयं अपने ही विरुद्ध गवाही देते हो कि तुम उनकी संतान हो जिन्होंने भविष्यद्वक्ताओं की हत्या की थी.

32 Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your fathers.

32 ठीक है! भरते जाओ अपने पूर्वजों के पापों का घड़ा.

33 You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape the sentence of hell?

33 “अरे सांपो! विषधर की संतान! कैसे बचोगे तुम नर्क-दण्ड से?

34 Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town.

34 इसलिये मेरा कहना सुनो: मैं तुम्हारे पास भविष्यद्वक्ता, ज्ञानी और पवित्र शास्त्र के शिक्षक भेज रहा हूं. उनमें से कुछ की तो तुम हत्या करोगे, कुछ को तुम क्रूस पर चढ़ाओगे तथा कुछ को तुम यहूदी सभागृह में कोड़े लगाओगे और नगर-नगर यातनाएं दोगे

35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

35 कि तुम पर सभी धर्मी व्यक्तियों के पृथ्वी पर बहाए लहू का दोष आ पड़े—धर्मी हाबिल के लहू से लेकर बैरेखाया के पुत्र ज़करयाह के लहू तक का, जिसका वध तुमने मंदिर और वेदी के बीच किया.

36 Truly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.

36 सच तो यह है कि इन सबका दंड इसी पीढ़ी पर आ पड़ेगा.

37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!

37 “येरूशलेम! ओ येरूशलेम! तू भविष्यद्वक्ताओं की हत्या करता तथा उनका पथराव करता है, जिन्हें तेरे लिए भेजा जाता है. कितनी बार मैंने यह प्रयास किया कि तेरी संतान को इकट्ठा कर एकजुट करूं, जैसे मुर्गी अपने चूज़ों को अपने पंखों के नीचे इकट्ठा करती है किंतु तूने न चाहा.

38 Look, your house is left to you desolate.

38 इसलिये अब यह समझ ले कि तेरा घर तेरे लिए उजाड़ छोड़ा जा रहा है.

39 For I tell you that you will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

39 मैं तुझे बताए देता हूं कि इसके बाद तू मुझे तब तक नहीं देखेगा जब तक तू यह नारा न लगाए. ‘धन्य है वह, जो प्रभु के नाम में आ रहा है!’”
