Psalms 56

1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” A Miktam of David, when the Philistines seized him in Gath. Be merciful to me, O God, for men are hounding me; all day they press their attack.

1 Dem Vorsänger. «Von der stummen Taube unter den Fremden.» Eine Denkschrift Davids; als ihn die Philister ergriffen zu Gat. (056-2) O Gott, sei mir gnädig; denn es schnaubt ein Mensch wider mich, immerfort bekriegt und bedrängt er mich!

2 My enemies pursue me all day long, for many proudly assail me.

2 (056-3) Meine Widersacher schnauben den ganzen Tag, ja viele Hohe streiten wider mich.

3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.

3 (056-4) Wenn mir angst ist, vertraue ich auf dich!

4 In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

4 (056-5) In Gott will ich rühmen sein Wort; auf Gott vertraue ich und habe keine Furcht; was kann Fleisch mir antun?

5 All day long they twist my words; all their thoughts are on my demise.

5 (056-6) Täglich lauern sie auf meine Worte, auf mein Unglück gehen alle ihre Gedanken;

6 They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps while they wait to take my life.

6 (056-7) sie rotten sich zusammen, lauschen im Verborgenen, beobachten meine Tritte und lauern auf mein Leben.

7 In spite of such sin, will they escape? In Your anger, O God, cast down the nations.

7 (056-8) Sollten sie bei ihrer Bosheit entrinnen? O Gott, stürze die Völker im Zorn!

8 You have taken account of my wanderings. Put my tears in Your bottle—are they not in Your book?

8 (056-9) Du zählst, wie oft ich fliehen muß; sammle meine Tränen in deinen Schlauch! Stehen sie nicht in deinem Buch?

9 Then my enemies will retreat on the day I cry for help. By this I will know that God is on my side.

9 (056-10) Am Tage, da ich rufe, weichen meine Feinde zurück; das weiß ich, daß Gott für mich ist.

10 In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise,

10 (056-11) In Gott will ich rühmen das Wort, im HERRN will ich rühmen das Wort;

11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

11 (056-12) auf Gott vertraue ich und habe keine Furcht; was kann ein Mensch mir antun?

12 Your vows are upon me, O God; I will render thank offerings to You.

12 (056-13) Die Gelübde, die ich dir, o Gott, gelobt, liegen auf mir; ich will dir Dankopfer bezahlen!

13 For You have delivered my soul from death, and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.

13 (056-14) Denn hast du nicht meine Seele vom Tode errettet, meine Füße vom Gleiten, damit ich vor Gottes Angesicht wandle im Lichte des Lebens?
