| BSB 1 Jesus went on from there and came to His hometown, accompanied by His disciples. | KJV 1 And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. |
| BSB 2 When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these ideas?” they asked. “What is this wisdom He has been given? And how can He perform such miracles? | KJV 2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? |
| BSB 3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t His sisters here with us as well?” And they took offense at Him. | KJV 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. |
| BSB 4 Then Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own household is a prophet without honor.” | KJV 4 But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. |
| BSB 5 So He could not perform any miracles there, except to lay His hands on a few of the sick and heal them. | KJV 5 And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. |
| BSB 6 And He was amazed at their unbelief. And He went around from village to village, teaching the people. | KJV 6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching. |
| BSB 7 Then Jesus called the Twelve to Him and began to send them out two by two, giving them authority over unclean spirits. | KJV 7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; |
| BSB 8 He instructed them to take nothing but a staff for the journey—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— | KJV 8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: |
| BSB 9 and to wear sandals, but not a second tunic. | KJV 9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. |
| BSB 10 And He told them, “When you enter a house, stay there until you leave that area. | KJV 10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. |
| BSB 11 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that place, as a testimony against them.” | KJV 11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. |
| BSB 12 So they set out and preached that the people should repent. | KJV 12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent. |
| BSB 13 They also drove out many demons and healed many of the sick, anointing them with oil. | KJV 13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. |
| BSB 14 Now King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known, and people were saying, “John the Baptist has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” | KJV 14 And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. |
| BSB 15 Others were saying, “He is Elijah,” and still others, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” | KJV 15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. |
| BSB 16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen from the dead!” | KJV 16 But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. |
| BSB 17 For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound and imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, whom Herod had married. | KJV 17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife: for he had married her. |
| BSB 18 For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife!” | KJV 18 For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife. |
| BSB 19 So Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she had been unable, | KJV 19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: |
| BSB 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man. When he heard John’s words, he was greatly perplexed; yet he listened to him gladly. | KJV 20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. |
| BSB 21 On Herod’s birthday, her opportunity arose. Herod held a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. | KJV 21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; |
| BSB 22 When the daughter of Herodias came and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests, and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” | KJV 22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. |
| BSB 23 And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom!” | KJV 23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. |
| BSB 24 Then she went out and asked her mother, “What should I request?” And her mother answered, “The head of John the Baptist.” | KJV 24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. |
| BSB 25 At once the girl hurried back to the king with her request: “I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately.” | KJV 25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. |
| BSB 26 The king was consumed with sorrow, but because of his oaths and his guests, he did not want to refuse her. | KJV 26 And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. |
| BSB 27 So without delay, the king commanded that John’s head be brought in. He sent an executioner, who went and beheaded him in the prison. | KJV 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, |
| BSB 28 The man brought John’s head on a platter and presented it to the girl, who gave it to her mother. | KJV 28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. |
| BSB 29 When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and placed it in a tomb. | KJV 29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb. |
| BSB 30 Meanwhile, the apostles gathered around Jesus and brought Him news of all they had done and taught. | KJV 30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. |
| BSB 31 And He said to them, “Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. | KJV 31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. |
| BSB 32 So they went away in a boat by themselves to a solitary place. | KJV 32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. |
| BSB 33 But many people saw them leaving and recognized them. They ran together on foot from all the towns and arrived before them. | KJV 33 And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. |
| BSB 34 When Jesus stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And He began to teach them many things. | KJV 34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. |
| BSB 35 By now the hour was already late. So the disciples came to Jesus and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is already late. | KJV 35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: |
| BSB 36 Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” | KJV 36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. |
| BSB 37 But Jesus told them, “You give them something to eat.” They asked Him, “Should we go out and spend two hundred denarii to give all of them bread to eat?” | KJV 37 He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? |
| BSB 38 “Go and see how many loaves you have,” He told them. And after checking, they said, “Five—and two fish.” | KJV 38 He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. |
| BSB 39 Then Jesus directed them to have the people sit in groups on the green grass. | KJV 39 And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. |
| BSB 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. | KJV 40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. |
| BSB 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, Jesus spoke a blessing and broke the loaves. Then He gave them to His disciples to set before the people. And He divided the two fish among them all. | KJV 41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. |
| BSB 42 They all ate and were satisfied, | KJV 42 And they did all eat, and were filled. |
| BSB 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. | KJV 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. |
| BSB 44 And there were five thousand men who had eaten the loaves. | KJV 44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men. |
| BSB 45 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd. | KJV 45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. |
| BSB 46 After bidding them farewell, He went up on the mountain to pray. | KJV 46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. |
| BSB 47 When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and Jesus was alone on land. | KJV 47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. |
| BSB 48 He could see that the disciples were straining to row, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea. He intended to pass by them, | KJV 48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. |
| BSB 49 but when they saw Him walking on the sea, they cried out, thinking He was a ghost— | KJV 49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: |
| BSB 50 for they all saw Him and were terrified. But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.” | KJV 50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. |
| BSB 51 Then He climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. And the disciples were utterly astounded, | KJV 51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. |
| BSB 52 for they had not understood about the loaves, but their hearts had been hardened. | KJV 52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. |
| BSB 53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and moored the boat. | KJV 53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. |
| BSB 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, the people recognized Jesus | KJV 54 And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, |
| BSB 55 and ran through that whole region, carrying the sick on mats to wherever they heard He was. | KJV 55 And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. |
| BSB 56 And wherever He went—villages and towns and countrysides—they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged Him just to let them touch the fringe of His cloak. And all who touched Him were healed. | KJV 56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole. |
